Optimal Groundwater Recharge Locations & Critical Aquifer Recharge Areas in the Spring Creek Watershed
On June 26, 2024 Graham Markowitz (SRBC Hydrologist) presented the local implications of this program to over 30 attendees at the PA Fish & Boat Commission Facility in Bellefonte, PA.
The Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC) is collaborating with partners to use high recharge potential areas for various water and land management actions. High recharge potential areas have been mapped using GIS. A request for a local assessment of recharge potential in any region, county, or watershed can be submitted through the SRBC's website. Related projects can be funded through the Consumptive Use Mitigation Program.​
Fun Fact: The area between the surface water and groundwater divide of the Spring Creek Watershed makes up 16.5% of land area but contributes 19.5% of recharge potential. Scotia Barrens, one of the few remaining forested, carbonate areas of the Nittany Valley, contributes to the disproportionate recharge potential of the region.
